This accreditation will allow the company to boost the R&D&I of its more than 100 partners over the coming years.

Santiago. 28/December/2023. The Cluster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida (Bioga), entity that represents the Galician biotech ecosystem has achieved for the first time the accreditation as Innovative Business Group specialized in biotechnology.

This accreditation, recently granted by the General Directorate of Industry and Small and Medium Enterprises, will allow Bioga to boost the R&D&I of its more than one hundred members. “This certificate is a recognition of the work that has been done in recent years in collaboration with companies, technology centers and administration and will undoubtedly help us in the work we are doing with GAIN to achieve the objectives of the Strategy for the Consolidation of the Galician Biotechnology Sector,” says Bioga‘s president, José Manuel López Vilariño.

The IBG seal allows Bioga to consolidate itself as a reference cluster in the Iberian biotech ecosystem, reinforcing the strategic role of the Galician bioregion as a reference in biotechnology. “Our companies and projects will take a step forward in terms of R&D&I and competitiveness”, highlights Julio Martínez, Bioga‘s Project Director, who emphasizes that they will be able to participate in the Support Program for Innovative Business Clusters and will receive support to develop research, development and innovation activities in cooperation.

Currently there are already more than 100 partners within the Bioga IBG. They work in biotechnology application subsectors such as pharmaceuticals, agri-food, health, marine, cosmetics, forestry, among others. “Through this initiative, sectorial hybridization processes can be encouraged and add value to other initiatives we already have underway in the ecosystem, such as the European Ibero Bio Project,” says Loli Pereiro, Bioga‘s manager.

Innovation agent

The IBG seal responds to a European Union strategy to strengthen sectoral clusters. In the new policies promoted by Europe through the Smart Specialization Strategies, clusters are considered relevant innovation agents, as in the Framework Program for Research and Innovation Horizon Europe (2021-2027).

Bioga is a non-profit business association that supports the value chain of the biotechnology sector in Galicia. Its mission: to energize the agents of the life sciences ecosystem of the Galician community with the aim of configuring a solid research environment, promoting knowledge transfer and consolidating a business network that becomes the economic engine of Galicia and contributes to the welfare of society.

The Cluster Tecnolóxico Empresarial das Ciencias da Vida, now as IBG, will be able to offer a new source of funding exclusively for its associates and complement its areas of action, among which are talent management, entrepreneurship and project financing, promoting networking, innovation and intersectoral hybridization, as well as internationalization and access to new markets.
