The Life Sciences Technology Cluster will contribute its experience in biotechnology to develop a project supported by the Ministry of Industry that will create environmentally friendly urban environments.
Santiago, June 2, 2025. The Bioga Business Technology Cluster is participating in the Ecopest Tech Solutions II project, coordinated by the onTech Innovation Cluster, which aims to revolutionize the sustainable use of biocides for insect and rodent control in cities. The initiative, included in the Innovative Business Clusters (AEI) support program and funded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism with €400,000, seeks to create healthier and more environmentally friendly urban environments.
The Ecopest Tech Solutions project is progressing into its second phase, developing technologies that enable the application of sustainable biocides for urban pest control. The research, in which Bioga, chaired by José Manuel López Vilariño, is participating, aims to have a direct impact on people’s lives by reducing their exposure to chemicals and promoting a more environmentally friendly approach to pest control that is respectful of human, animal, and environmental health.
Bioga will contribute its expertise in biotechnology. “This is an ambitious project that aims to improve the quality of life for city dwellers,” emphasizes José Manuel López Vilariño. “From Galicia, we will make available all our assets, our talent, our resources, and our tools to seek and find solutions that promote the intelligent use of biocides in cities.”
Multidisciplinary project
The multidisciplinary consortium in which Bioga participates and which coordinates the onTech Innovation Cluster also includes Athisa Medioambiente, Nazaríes Intelligenia, Cactus, and the Medina Foundation. Each entity contributes its expertise in key areas such as the environment, communication, knowledge transfer, and biotechnology.
Ecopest Tech II will develop tools, such as digital monitoring systems and predictive algorithms, that will allow treatments to be applied only when and where they are truly needed. This solution will prevent the dispersal of biocides, thus reducing risks to people and animals. Furthermore, these solutions will enable environmental health companies to improve their operating protocols, optimizing resources and offering safe and effective services.
The guidelines of EU Regulation 528/2012, which regulates the marketing and use of biocides, require a rigorous assessment of the risks to human health and the environment, safer and more controlled applications, and a reduction in the unnecessary use of substances harmful to health. In this respect, Ecopest Tech II represents a step towards a healthier city model, where technology is put at the service of collective well-being, establishing itself as a benchmark for responsible and effective pest control.
