October 24th 2025.<\/strong>\u00a0The Interdisciplinary Center for Chemistry and Biology (CICA) at the University of A Coru\u00f1a (UDC) is hosting this morning the initial meeting to design the strategy for the European project CLIRAQUA (Climate Resilience and Adaptation in Aquaculture), a transnational initiative that aims to strengthen the resilience of Atlantic aquaculture to the effects of climate change. This project has a budget of \u20ac1.96 million, is 75% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and brings together entities from Spain, Portugal, France, and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today\u2019s meeting at CICA marks the beginning of the planning phase for tasks and digital tools for a thirty-month project, concluding in March 2028. CLIRAQUA will promote climate change adaptation through ecosystem-based solutions and innovative technologies. Its objectives are to reduce the vulnerability of aquaculture species and environments to phenomena such as rising temperatures, salinity increases, and declining water quality; and to develop practical tools that enable producers, government agencies, and local communities to anticipate and adapt to these challenges.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Consortium participants<\/strong><br \/>\nThe consortium led by CICA is also formed by the University Institute of Sustainable Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystem of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain); Business Technological Cluster of Life Sciences (Bioga) (Spain); CSIC Marine Research Institute (Spain); Universidade dos A\u00e7ores (Portugal); Instituto Portugu\u00eas do Mar e da Atmosfera \u2013 IPMA (Portugal), Centro Interdisciplinar de Investiga\u00e7\u00e3o Marinha e Ambiental \u2013 CIIMAR (Portugal), Marine Institute (Ireland), College of Science and Engineering of the University of Galway (Ireland); Institut National de Recherche en Agriculture, Alimentation et Environnement INRAE \u200b\u200b(France) and Center pour l\u2019aquaculture, la p\u00eache et l\u2019environnement de Nouvelle-Aquitaine \u2013 CAPENA (France). Seafood Legacy is an associate partner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CLIRAQUA will create a repository of climate and ecological data to generate interactive vulnerability maps, implement adaptive management protocols for producers and government agencies, develop an early warning system for diseases associated with changes in temperature and salinity, and establish a Transnational Aquaculture Resilience Network to facilitate the adoption of best practices.
